Jean: Ownership over one’s own body

Jean has a tattoo of two flowers with script in between to represent healing from a sexual assault. She describes getting the tattoo as a “physical assertion of the ownership I have over my own body.” She wanted traditional tattoo features with a strong-looking script. The placement of the tattoo is on her upper thigh, not visible to others most days, describing that it was a tattoo just for her. It is a reminder to her about the importance of consent and her ability to withdraw it at any time. Jean says, “It has helped me to feel stronger and more confident in asserting boundaries, and is a grounding reminder when I feel overwhelmed.”
