Survivor ’97 is a 47-year-old woman with the “Sagittarius broken face” tattooed on her neck. She chose the location of the neck so that she and others can see it. She got this tattoo upon retiring from the military after 24 years and 80 days of service. She shares that she did not know how she would adjust to civilian life after service and suffering from PTSD, but a friend told her that there is life after service. The tattoo signifies the brokenness she feels from serving her country, but also the ability to heal with the help of friends and family. “It means I am a survivor.” She calls it her tattoo therapy, as looking at it reminds her that she can be put back together. “Every time I look in the mirror and I am having those really shitty days, and I don’t want to be around anymore, I can see the tattoo and know that there is still meaning to life.”
